General Information
The scientific name of Mulberry is Morus spp., a genus belonging to the Moraceae Family of the Urticales Subclass, and it is usually associated with sericulture, the production of silk with the silkworm. Mulberries mostly cultivated in warm and subtropic areas of north hemisphere.
Cultivation in Turkey
The most important berry fruits in terms of amount of production in Turkey after grape are strawberry and followed by mulberry. In Turkey, Mulberry trees are grown only for fruit production compared to the other main mulberry production countries which use mulberry trees for leaf yield in sericulture.
The proportion of mulberry trees in Turkey is 95% of trees belonging to Morus alba(White Mulberry), %3 to Morus nigra and 2% to Morus rubra. The limited number of trees belongs to Morus laevigata
Mulberries are cultivated throughout Turkey but they are more common in Northeast, Southeast and Central Anatolia between 0 to 1500 m above sea level. The biggest cultivation areas are; Malatya, Erzincan, Elazığ and Erzurum.
